New Patient Exam & Cleaning

  • Comprehensive oral exam
  • Professional cleaning
  • Digital X-rays
  • iTero 3D scan
  • Gum health assessment
  • TMJ assessment
  • Professional polish

For patients new to the practice. If further treatment is recommended, you get a written quote before anything is scheduled. Nothing is decided in the chair.

What to expect

Your first visit, step by step

Plan for about 60 to 90 minutes. Here is what typically happens, in order.

1

Check in

If you filled out your forms online, check-in takes less than two minutes. If not, we hand you an iPad in the waiting room and it takes about ten to fill out your information.

2

Digital X-rays and a 3D scan

Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than film. The iTero scanner takes a 3D model of your teeth with a small wand, so no impression trays and nothing to gag on.

3

Exam with the doctor

A full look at teeth, gums, bite, and jaw joints, plus an oral cancer screening. You see your own scans on the screen while the doctor walks through them.

4

Cleaning

Most new patients are cleaned the same day. If your gums need deeper treatment, we explain why and schedule it separately rather than surprising you with it.

5

Your plan, in writing

We will provide you with a treatment plan including a breakdown of what’s urgent and what can wait. You’ll also receive payment plan options to make treatment cost more manageable.

6

Booking

If you need dental treatment, our scheduling team will help you find days and times that work for you. And of course we will schedule you back for your next routine check up or cleaning and exam typically in 4-6 months.

New patient forms

Three short forms, about ten minutes total. Complete them before you arrive and check-in only takes a minute instead of ten. Prefer paper or an iPad? We will hand you one when you walk in.

  1. Patient Registration

Your contact info, insurance details, and emergency contact.

2. Health History

Medical conditions, medications, and allergies, so the doctor has the full picture.

3. Financial Policy

Our payment and insurance policy, reviewed and signed before your visit.

Before you arrive

What to bring

Bring with you

  • Photo ID
  • Insurance card, if you have one
  • A list of medications you take
  • Any recent X-rays from another office

Coming from another dentist?

You do not need to collect your own records. Give us the name of your previous office and we will request your chart and X-rays for you. Recent X-rays often mean we do not need to retake them.

Arrive a few minutes early

Ten minutes is plenty if your forms are done, fifteen if not. Parking is directly outside the building and it is free.

You are not the first

Common situations we see every week

If any of these sound like you, you are in ordinary company here.

It has been years since your last visit

People put off the dentist for all sorts of reasons, and a long gap is one of the most common things we see. There is no lecture and no commentary about how long it has been.

We start where you are, tell you what we find, and sort it in order of what matters most. Plenty of patients who now come every six months started with a visit they had been putting off for a decade.

You are anxious about dental work

Two things here are practical rather than reassuring. Cases are planned digitally, so you see the full plan and approve it before anything starts, which removes most of the not-knowing.

And the practice uses a Fotona dental laser, which for many procedures means less drilling and, in some cases, less anesthetic. Tell the front desk when you book and we will give you a longer appointment so nothing feels rushed.

You have a treatment plan from another office

Bring it. A second opinion is a normal request, especially before committing to implants, veneers, or full mouth work, and we will tell you plainly if we would do the same thing.

Bring your X-rays if you have them. A limited exam and consultation for a second opinion is credited toward treatment if you go ahead with us.

English is not your first language

Both doctors are native Russian and Ukrainian speakers, and staff also speak Spanish and Armenian. That means the exam, the treatment plan, and conversations can happen in your language, not through a translator or a family member.

Paying for treatment

Insurance and financing

Insurance

Modern Smile Design is in network with Delta Dental and accepts most PPO plans, and we file claims for you. We do not accept HMO plans or Medicaid.

Coverage varies a lot by plan. Call with your carrier and plan name and the front desk will check your specific benefits before your appointment.

No insurance

The $129 new patient exam and cleaning is the same price with or without insurance, and it is less than most offices charge for the X-rays alone.

Treatment is quoted up front in writing, so you always know the number before you agree to anything.

Payment plans

We offer financing through Cherry and CareCredit, including 0% options for those who qualify. Applying takes a few minutes on your phone and does not have to be decided at the chair.

Questions

First visit questions

How much is a new patient visit at Modern Smile Design?

Plan for 60 to 90 minutes. That covers the exam, digital X-rays, an iTero 3D scan, a cleaning, and time to go through your treatment plan with the doctor. It runs shorter if you complete your forms before you arrive.

Will I get a cleaning at my first visit?

Yes, most new patients are cleaned the same day, and it is included in the $129. The exception is if your gums need deeper periodontal treatment, which takes longer and is scheduled separately. If that applies, we explain why before booking it rather than adding it on the day.

Do you see children?

Yes, Modern Smile Design treats children 10+ as well as adults. Families are welcome to book appointments together. Call (941) 231-8121 and the front desk will try to arrange back-to-back times.

What if I have not been to a dentist in years?

That is one of the most common situations we see, and there is no lecture attached to it. We examine where things stand, explain what we find, and put together a plan in order of priority so it is manageable rather than overwhelming.

Can I get a second opinion on a treatment plan from another dentist?

Yes. Bring the written plan and any X-rays you have. Second opinions are a normal request before committing to implants, veneers, or full mouth reconstruction, and the consultation fee is credited toward treatment if you decide to go ahead here.

Do I need to stop taking my medications before the visit?

No. Take your medications as normal and bring a list of them, including doses. Blood thinners, bisphosphonates, and diabetes medications matter most for planning, so mention those when you book if any apply to you.

What if I need treatment I cannot afford right now?

Your written plan separates what is urgent from what can wait, so you can address the important parts first and stage the rest. Financing through Cherry and CareCredit is available, including 0% options for those who qualify.

Can I be seen the same day for a dental emergency?

Same-day emergency appointments are available during business hours. Call (941) 231-8121 first rather than walking in, so time can be held for you and the right room prepared.
